You may or may not have noticed that I haven’t been posting much. I haven’t had the time or ability. This has not been a good summer. August was the worst of it.
On August 10th, Katie and I were hit by an 18 wheeler, who sped up and cut us off while he was merging, then drove off. Classic hit and run. The NJ state trooper called it a “no fault.” The car suffered body damage, and I suffered a back injury. The police have yet to give us the accident report, now three weeks later. Insurance needs this to reimburse us and to go after the truck for leaving the scene of an accident. After a certain amount of time, they can’t go after the trucker or company
I’m not saying that the police are dragging their feet on this on purpose. They may have more important things to do than follow up on felonies. But every year, the truckers’ union throws a party for the state troopers in every state (according to Katie’s dad, who was a mechanic for 30 years). If you can get out of a ticket with a PBA card, imagine what a party will get you.
So yeah, I’m bitter. My back is jacked up. I have medical bills that might not be covered because of the lack of a report. Katie has repair bills on her car, not to mention tow and car rental, all which are supposed to be reimbursed, and that’s now in jeopardy.
For the past week, I’ve had bronchitis. This is not unusual. I have chronic bronchitis and asthma (both classified as COPD, though I’ve had one cigarette in my life). What’s unusual is that it has lasted this long, beyond the round of antibiotics that I had to take. Between my back and my lungs, I’ve been living on my couch for the past three weeks.
Oh yeah, I bruised my tailbone in July. That wasn’t comfortable.
The accident has inspired me to take another first aid class. I was Red Cross, CPR, and AMAP certified 10 years ago, but that’s far too long, and I’m sure that they have new techniques (I’ve heard that they no long recommend mouth-to-mouth). If our injuries were more severe, proper first aid might make a difference between life and death.
So yeah, this has been a shit storm of a summer. At least Fall is coming up.
