The Muppet Show Returns! Yayyyyyyy!!!!!!

doge in space card redux

I have read from many different sources that ABC is planning a return of The Muppet Show. What have I done that the TV Gods are rewarding me so!? This is incredible news, the kid in me (who’s not very different from the grown up in me) is doing cartwheels. This is bigger news that Dom Deluise telling Kermit that he should go to Hollywood (Holllllleeeeewood)

Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!

I. Love. Muppets. I loved The Muppet Show. I loved Sesame Street. I loved Fraggle Rock. I can quote The Muppet Movie until someone slaps me. Jim Henson was my childhood god.

For you Millennials, let me explain: The Muppet Show was a variety show, with Kermit the Frog as host, and starring Fozzie, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Rowlf, Doctor Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, and a cast of hundreds of furry creatures. Each week, they had a celebrity as a guest star. I suppose it’s format was a bit like Saturday Night Live, but an equal amount of the show happened backstage and dealt with the chaos of “live theater.”

It was crazy. It was ridiculous. It was silly.

It was the greatest thing ever.

By the way, you can find a lot of old episodes on YouTube.

Here’s my favorite song from the show. Harry Belafonte singing Turn the World Around. It’s beautiful.

But I wonder if the new generation will get it. Times have changed, and while the Muppets seem to have a following among some kids and teens, is it enough to make it work? It didn’t work with the reboot Muppets Tonight. They might have to drastically change the format (and according to Vanity Fair, they are) though I hope not too much.

Either way, I’m watching. I bleed brightly colored fake fur…um I guess to fit the metaphor, I’d have to bleed hand. Does that make any sense?

It doesn’t have to make sense. IT’S THE FREAKING MUPPETS!!!!

WrestleMania Picks and Predictions

Like my posts? Follow my website or “Like” my facebook fan page and/or follow me on Twitter. You can also purchase my debut novel, Song of Simon, at any online bookstore or a real one (they both exist). Song of Simon currently has a 4.7/5.0 rating on Amazon, so it’s pretty damn good. If you’re looking for something FREE, you can read my serial (soon to be an expanded series of novels) The Watchmage of Old New York. Though it ended in February, 2014, it remains one of the most popular serials on JukePop OF ALL TIME!

Tonight’s the night, bright lights, blah blah blah, some other line, can’t remember the theme song…

WrestleMania is here, and I’m excited. I’m always excited, even though the build up has been pretty meh. Except for the awesome promos by Paul Heyman and Bray Wyatt, I haven’t been moved. Still, it’s the biggest night of the year for wrestling marks, and I mark like nobody’s business.

Before I give my picks, let me give my (wishful) predictions:

Rollins is going to cash in. Whether he takes the title or not, I don’t know.

Daniel Bryan is going to turn heel (thus preventing him from becoming another Cena). He will feud with either Ambrose or Ziggler, and I will explode with joy.

Wyatt and Taker will ratchet up the theatrics to create the creepiest match of the night. Expect Taker “rise from your graves” (Yay Altered Beast references) and Wyatt “crazy crabs from your grave.”

Rollins vs Orton will be the Match of the Night.

The tag team 4-way will be the Suck of the Night.

The IC and US titles will rise in prestige to the point where people will forget that the WWE belt only gets defended every three months.

The WWE Universe will complain and threaten to cancel the WWE Network.

Now for the picks…

Brock v Reigns: Brock
Tag Team fatal 4 way: Kidd and Cesaro – WWE
Orton v Rollins: Rollins IC Ladder Match: Ziggler
Taker v Wyatt: Taker
Cena v Rusev: Cena (lol cena wins)
Sting v HHH: Sting
Battle Royal: Hideo Itami
AJ/Paige v Bellas: AJ/Paige

Let’s see how it goes.

Love it? Hate it? New Avengers Lineup!

We all know by now that Marvel comics is doing a massive crossover (and money-maker) beginning in May. You’ve heard the name before: yes, they’re redoing Secret Wars. Of course they’re doing it differently, but just the name alone is going to suck recovering comic book addicts like me back in. Sometimes I feel like Michael Corleone in Godfather III (which isn’t as bad as it’s reputation, but that’s a different story).

I’m not going to talk about the new Secret Wars, but I’m going to talk about the aftermath. Marvel recently revealed it’s post-Secret Wars lineup for the Avengers. I love it.

I love it because it shows that Marvel is trying to reach a wider demographic: Not just white boys, but boys and girls of all races and religions.

The new line up is:

Iron Man: Maybe it’s Tony, maybe it’s Pepper Potts

Ms. Marvel: Not Carol Danvers, but the teen Kamala Khan (the first Muslim and Pakistani Marvel Superhero)

Thor: Not Donald Blake, but the new female wielder of Mjolnir. Her identity is still unknown.

Captain America: Not Steve Rogers (who was artificially aged, nor Bucky Barnes. It’s Sam Wilson–The Falcon–who carries the shield (does he carry the shield? I hope so).

Vision: Let’s face it, you can’t have the Avengers without Vision.

Nova: The teenaged Sam Alexander, who is also half Latino.

Spider-Man: Not Peter Parker, but Miles Morales. Yes, Miles Morales is sucked into the main continuity from the Ultimates Universe (which gets destroyed). I love Miles, he’s a great character, and I think he fits perfectly what a modern Spider-Man should be. What this means for Pete, I don’t know, but I hope he gets a happy ending, or at least not die.

The New Avengers

So as you can see, Marvel is going young (Nova, Spidey, and Ms. Marvel) and they’re going diverse. They’re going for the new generation, and I think that’s the right move. Diversity is the key.

“Watchmage” Novel Update

I was planning for a May release of the novelized version of The Watchmage of Old New York. That isn’t going to happen. My editor is working very diligently on it, as is my cover artist. Neither will be ready for a while.

I’m ok with that. I’d rather put out something late, but of higher quality, than something rushed and faulty.

In the mean time, I’m working on the sequels, and some short stories for an anthology.

The short stories are affecting me. I have professional level stories going back fifteen years, and many have been published in magazines or journals. That’s great, but to me they are examples of how far I’ve come since those first trembling words. They take me back to a place I once was, but will never be again. Once I was full of hope. I thought that by now I’d have a major publishing deal and would be a true success. Instead, I let my madness overwhelm me. Writing has become less a dream and more a necessity. Writing keeps me alive, and it’s the closest I get to “happy.”

I am miserable by nature, and that is not going to change. I’ve found that I can’t even talk about my past anymore without triggering depression and/or anxiety. My anxiety is getting worse. I’m not a success. I’m a writer trying not to die.

Yeah, I know that I’m bitching and moaning. I also know that if you don’t have bipolar syndrome, any comment you make about “sucking it up” is ignorant and presumptuous. Live in these shoes. See how they fit. Take my meds and suffer the side effects. Suffer the twitches and ticks. Suffer the failing endocrine system. Enjoy living on a disability check, not because you don’t work, but because without Medicare, you are dead. I dare you.

Yet I still manage to work part-time. I still manage to scape out a living. People say that if you’re on disability, you’re lazy and sponge off the government and honest tax payers. Be thankful that you don’t have to.

By the way, I receive 800 dollars a month from disability, and 150 dollars from food stamps. Can you live on 950 a month? In one of the richest counties in the world (my rent for a studio apt is 1150? And be trapped here because you are so entrenched in the system? Try it. I dare you.

Or shut up. They both work.

This post took an ugly turn. Here’s a meme to make you happy.

Ninja Turtle Donatello Dies! (maybe)

A quick reminder: My Goodreads giveaway runs out at the end of the month. Enter now for a chance to win a signed copy of SONG OF SIMON.

I haven’t read the TMNT comic in many years, but I have a lot of love for the heroes in a half shell. That’s why when I read that Donatello dies in the next issue, I was shocked.

Actually, I wasn’t shocked. If I remember correctly, Donatello was once shot and thrown from a helicopter. They kept him alive with robotic parts, turning him into a cyborg.

Yes, a teenage mutant ninja cyborg.

Donnie was never my favorite (that goes to Leo), but I liked him a lot. I always saw him as the most pure-hearted of the turtles, even more than Mikey. Donnie was the introverted nerd, and the nerd in me related to him. Nerds of a feather…er…shell…flock together.

I’m sure that they will find a way to revive him. After all, in comics everybody comes back except Uncle Ben, Batman’s parents, and Bucky Barnes…forget that last part.

Here’s a screen shot from the comic.

Poor Donnie.

I told my pet turtle Shelvin about it. He was unmoved, and went back to fighting Godzilla.

March Madness Has Stolen My Soul…and My Diet

I have been planted in my easy chair since Thursday morning, watching every freaking game in the NCAA Tournament till I pass out at midnight. I have eaten wings, pizza, chips, salad, pretzel hot dogs, jalapeno poppers, and my infamous “Devil Dip.” I have lost 130 pounds since 2013. I may have gained it all back.

I don’t usually post about sports, but I do like them, and I love March Madness. This year, I’ve had less invested in it (No Syracuse), but I have a pretty good bracket, and the games have almost all come down to the wire.

I don’t remember the last time New York had four teams in the tournament, including TWO SUNY SCHOOLS! Of course, two days in and they’re all eliminated. I picked all four teams in my bracket, including SUNY Albany to reach the Sweet Sixteen. Yes, it was a dumb move, but I have a sweet spot for SUNY. Anyway, I’ve only lost 3 Sweet Sixteen teams, so I’m still in the hunt.

March Madness isn’t just a feat of endurance for the players, it is for spectators too. Challenge yourself to sit around for 12 hours a day/ 4 days, eating crappy food and watching the game (although exciting) game. It’s like a marathon for lazy ass fans.

I am lazy. I am a fan. I have an ass…and it’s getting larger as I write.

Madness.

Terry Pratchett and the Splinter in Your Heart

First, a reminder: I’m having a Goodreads Giveaway for 2 signed copies of Song of Simon. You can enter here

I never read any Discworld. I never read Strata or The Unadulterated Cat. The only book I ever read of his was Good Omens, with Neil Gaiman. Despite this, I’m very moved by his death.

Books make a difference. They make people happy, and his work brought so much joy to people. He died too soon, of a horrible disease that took his mind before his body. Yet he is now immortal, for his work will live on. Isn’t that all a writer wants–to live beyond death? I know that it is for me.

I wonder if he’d appreciate the irony around his death. He was a proponent of assisted suicide, and that caused great controversy. People championed him, and others damned him. It’s a subject that he had the courage to fight for. In the end, he died before he had a chance.

According to Gaiman, none of us really knew him. He was not the comic personality that we assume from his writing. He was angry, even before his disease. To quote “Some people have encountered an affable man with a beard and a hat. They believe they have met Sir Terry Pratchett. They have not.”

He had a splinter digging into his heart, and it fueled his books. His mastery came from fury. Can you blame him?

I found this collection of quotes by him. Can you see the anger? Anger made him strong. It made him real. It made him a master. May we all keep that splinter in our hearts.

“And Death said: ‘AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER.’”

“Terry took Death’s arm, and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night.”

I hope that you find peace, Sir Terry.

Turning Over an Old Leaf

First, a reminder: I’m having a Goodreads Giveaway for 2 signed copies of Song of Simon. You can enter here

Now then…
For the past month, my productivity has been way down. What happened is that I finished the first draft of the second Watchmage novel, and I’m in revision mode. That means that I’m not writing, and when I don’t write, I start to come apart. I’ve been watching too much Netflix and playing too many video games. Worse, my anxiety has been through the roof, which I attribute to the lack of writing.

ba8b3-dog-meme-no-idea

I started writing a short story the other day, and I suddenly suck. This is what happens when you don’t write on a schedule. It’s also what happens when you play video games and watch tv (even good tv) instead of read.

I’m trying to develop better coping methods for anxiety, and I think I need to read more. Getting lost in a book is the second best way for me to forget my troubles (writing is the best). Also, if I want to write better, I have to read more. If I fill my head with garbage, garbage comes out. Fill it with literary fruits and vegetables, and I produce something better, like a parfait or Edible Arrangement.

So I’m going to get back to my old school self and dive into books. It saved my sanity as a teen, maybe it’ll save it again.
